Be Afraid, Scofflaws!

They are cracking down in ways today never heard of before.

You cannot hide.  They are no longer friendly and kind about it.

Every day now counts against you, so you had best turn yourself and the books in, pay the fine for your overdue library books, and sneak out the door shamefacedly.

Libraries, facing budget cuts, having to lay off staff or even close, are now turning people over to collection agencies if they don't pay the fines owed on overdue materials.

In some cases, they are turning it over to the police, as Freeport, Pennsylvania's Katelyn Jageman and her mother learned.  The police came over to the 4-year-old girl's home to insist that the books be returned and fines totaling just over $80 be paid.

Yes, a four-year-old got a visit from the cops over library books.

So be careful in that library the next time you go.  Keep your voice down like they tell you to.  Bring the materials back on time.  If you are a day or two late, bring money and maybe cookies.

Those nice library ladies are watching, and they might know the local sheriff better than you think.
