Mastery and Privacy; Six Sentences and a Good Fence

"How in the world to you plan to master the technique when you won't put in the time to practice!" his mother's voice droned on.  It was the same lines he heard from her every day, so familiar that he had learned to mostly tune it out and only hear the key words that told him when to nod, when to shake his head, and when to look down in "shame."

When he knew by the timbre of her voice that she was finishing up, he began to nod vigorously, as if in agreement with every word.

He knew that her desire for him to achieve what she wanted was born of love, and he also knew he had to be the person he was made to be, which did not match her dreams.

Heaving a sigh as she left the room, he turned back to what he'd been doing before she came in.  He would practice, of course, but only he knew that the one thing he had mastered so far was simply appeasing her until he could be out on his own.

  8. nice tie-back* on the theme! no doubt a not-uncommon occurrence in families with children.

*probably not a 'real' term for the indeed of taking a theme (or theme word) and letting it mean one thing, but tying it back to the original intent.

  9. Nicely written. Even just a few sentences can have an arc.

  10. I think this is a sad reality for so many young people who are being "directed" into the career their parents want them to pursue. I am a firm believer that we each have our own dream in life, and our own path, and that should be encouraged, while instilling the practical realities of managing your own expenses. I also think that 18 is often too young to know what you want to be "when you grow up"! Great story, I could feel his earnest attempt to placate his mother while not giving up his own desires.

  11. Credit to you for telling so much in just six sentences. I guess we all bring our own experiences to add to the flavour of your tale, so there seems to be so much more to it than what you write.
