His girlfriend at the time picked the cat up off the street and brought it home, where her grandmother told her to find another home for it, they already had too many.

It was skittish, afraid of its own shadow, and already about 3 months old -- not a good fit for the shelter to try to find him a home, as he was already considered feral.

She came up with what she knew was a foolproof plan because his parents were soft hearted (and soft-headed, but that's another story).  She gave the cat to him as his fifteenth birthday gift, knowing his parents wouldn't say no if the animal was a gift.

We didn't say no, of course, when #1 Son's first girlfriend gave him a cat for his birthday; that was 14 1/2 years ago.

That's how Horizon, who is still scared of his own shadow, became a member of the family.
