The older children were in the homeschool baseball league, and at the practices the three, four and five-year-olds were at loose ends, running around and bored and wanting to play like the big kids.
There was extra equipment, bases, lightweight bats, balls, and etc., even a t-ball stand, which is good because i can't pitch worth anything as no one ever taught me how, and i became the unofficial t-ball coach.
We didn't space the bases anywhere near what they are for the big kids as the little guys aren't going to be up for running that far, and we didn't have enough children to divide into two teams so we had to adapt.
Our main lessons were how to hold the bat, how to stand, how to keep your eye on that ball, don't be afraid to give the ball a good, solid whack, and watch where you drop or throw that bat!
We also worked on which direction to run (very important!) and not to be afraid to reach your gloved hand out and try to catch the ball when you were playing infield or outfield.
The biggest lesson, though, was everyone cheered for everyone at every successful bat or run, the thing i wanted them to learn most was good sportsmanship.

It's Angel Sammy's Poetry Day! This week's image and my poem:
if you are really
famous for your great wisdom
the world comes to you
*******
I came here for adventure
and for the spectacular view.
It's great, but now I'm so tired,
when I get back down, I'm through!

Brian of Brian's Home hosts the Thankful Thursday Blog Hop. It's time to share something for which i am thankful.
Today i am thankful for catsitting, past and future. Ms. G's first camper adventure was a success and earned me some extra money. She is planning at least four or five more trips by the end of the year (!) including holiday trips to see family, all of which mean opportunities to earn a bit extra.

It sounds as if you were an exceptional coach, and that while having fun, the littlies learned some very important lessons.
ReplyDeleteHow can you not love the cat sitting! And I must say we will never know what that house looks like behind the fence. I bet those children loved playing ball and learning how to do it.
ReplyDeleteGood sportsmanship is so important. Even if they didn't learn much about how to play, that is more important.
ReplyDelete"We also worked on which direction to run (very important!)"
ReplyDeleteI did laugh imagining a 3year old running in the opposite direction.
It's more about taking part than winning.
ReplyDeleteYou are a treasure for everyone ~ Xo
