Words for Wednesday was begun by Delores and has become a moveable feast of word or picture or music prompts to encourage us to write stories, poems, or whatever strikes our fancy.    

This month, yours truly is providing the prompts on my blog.

Please feel free to use some of the prompts, none of them, or all of them as you see fit.  The point is to get the creative juices flowing in whatever manner your muse leads you.

The phone rang, startling us.  My Sweetie and i were sitting at the kitchen table, Bigger Girl was on the floor nearby on a Mouse Grey blanket playing with her baby toys and #1 Son was playing with Lego blocks in the next room.  (#2 Son and Little Girl were not even thought of yet, so this is way back in the day.)

At least, that's where he had been when i came to the table to sit and do some paperwork.

Being closest, i picked up the phone and was quite surprised to hear the voice of a 911 operator asking if there was an emergency at our location.

I am UNAWARE of any emergencies here, i told her, and as my husband and i were the only adults in the house and were both sitting at the table and not on the phone, i was unsure what had happened.

After all, it can be considered FRAUD to call the emergency number if it's not a real emergency.

At that moment, #1 Son peeped around the corner with a scared look, followed by a WEAK smile, and then his little head disappeared.

I told the emergency operator the four-year-old most likely culprit had just poked his head up and we would have a talk with him about not dialing that number again, and she thanked me and we ended the call.

In a more FUSTY, old fashioned time, punishment might have been handed down, but i decided there needed to be a more CLEMENT way of dealing with the situation.  After all, we never know what the WIND of Providence might bring and having a child who knows how and when to properly use the phone to call for help can be a boon.

Also, children have their fears, and fear of not being able to handle an emergency can make things worse.

I chose to COPE with the situation by first asking him why he'd called the number, sneaking into our bedroom and using the extension phone in there.  His answer told me what i already suspected, it was not from malice PREPENSE.

First, he was curious about what happened when you dialed the number.

Second, he was worried about being able to handle it if something bad happened as a member of our church had an emergency the week before and he'd heard the talk about it.

The next MORNING, after breakfast and morning Bible story and prayer, we played "calling 911."  With two unplugged phones, he pretended to call and i pretended to be the 911 operator and we went through telling his name and parents' names, phone number, location, and what kind of emergency it was.  We talked about how you never tell this information to a stranger unless you called them at 911, or it's a police officer or firefighter in a uniform.

After a couple of practice sessions, we'd taken the mystery out of what to do in an emergency, and we never had a repeat of such a false alarm.
