“That was quite the rousing game of kickball,” Dad said with a smile as the children came trooping in.
“Loud enough to wake the dead,” Mom added with a wink at Dad as she served up bowls of steaming soup with thick pieces of crusty bread.
“Yeah, it was a lot of fun!” said the youngest, who had been allowed to join the big kids, along with their friends up the street, as the scorekeeper.
“And we can’t play any quieter,” one of the older ones added. “Yelling is the best part!”
Mom and Dad both laughed at this and Dad said, “Well, then, we promise not to put a damper on your yelling or your fun.”

ReplyDeleteI have fond memories of playing kickball and, yes, we could get loud, but exuberant yelling is more fun when you're a participant. That's why there are so many retirement communities.
ReplyDeleteThe kids I was watching this morning definitely didn't know how to keep quiet. We went to the park and it was the best thing we could have done. Hopefully they will be calmer this afternoon. :)

I grew up in the projects and every kid in the neighborhood and sometimes their parents would all get together and play Kick the Can. And you're always and forever trying to shut up some kid who's going to reveal your hiding place! This was a real Deja Vu story for me! Thank you, Zoe

ReplyDeleteWhat a fun 6! Brought me back to my youth. I loved playing kickball at school. Back then the concrete parking lot is where recess was held and saw many a game of kickball. And yes! Yelling and screaming was the best part, it was totally unavoidable lol

ReplyDeleteHow I love the reminders of the simpler childhoods we led, no electronics and very little TV time. we lived outside as much as we could and entertained ourselves in games like this, or with imaginary adventures in backyard tents pitched over clotheslines. The sound of happy kids laughing and yelling and cheering each other on, is music to parent's ears. Kids have an abundance of energy to expend. :-)
