My blank look must have given away that i was rapidly trying to figure out how to politely decline the offer, because then she said, "Wait, do you even wear make-up?"
Only lipstick and mascara, and only once or twice a year, if even that, i said. Then i added, It's just too time consuming to me, and i think the last time i wore any was at my brother's wedding a couple of years ago.
"Whew, you said it, it is time consuming, I wish I didn't have to put it on, but I just feel like I look terrible without it."'
The make-up habit is one that i am very, very glad i never started.

Yes, children, back in the day
You got dressed up to travel this way.
A plane ride was so rare you knew
Only your Sunday best would do.
By my travel years,
Most dispensed with the hats,
But you still got dressed up,
And that was that.
The seats were indeed
Much more spacious,
The staff worked hard to
Be very gracious.
Passengers behaved
With manners and charm,
None ever thought of
Committing any harm.
Yes, times do change
Of that i'm quite aware,
That should never mean we
Dispense with behavior while up there.

Yesterday, i showed up at Ms. G's house to work as usual, and she asked if i was up for an adventure. Of course i was, so we went to a rescue out in the country to help them get hurricane prepared. It was a great place, i had fun meeting people who are very into rescue, and i am thankful we were able to get them as ready as you can ever be for a storm.

ReplyDeleteI did wear makeup for a time - and am very, very glad to have left those days behind me.
Love your poem - and wish that manners and politeness were values we retained. Too many people seem to think that they are old hat.
We like the fun Halloween fences. Mom has always been a makeup wearer. Being a flight attendant for many years it was part of the job and became a habit, but with the pandemic and masks, she doesn't wear it and is enjoying life without.

ReplyDeletesurely that simple statement is questionable on so many levels.
I have never used foundation. I hardly use makeup now that I have retired. Not even lipstick since we started wearing mask.
ReplyDeleteLove your poem. And, yes back in these days a trip to somewhere was an excursion with sunday dresses, and paper tickets made holes in by real people. Candies were bought for the trip - in real tins or sturdy, reusable boxes. Those were the days. But I agree! Let's keep the manners even if a trip is no more festive than crossing the street.

I don't wear makeup either and I don't color my hair anymore. It is what it is and it takes very little time to shower, dress and go. I'm happy about that.

LOve this. The first time I flew I wore a suit (and the second and the third etc) Now, people barely dress. Great poem, fence, six, and John Glenn's flight at 77 was an inspiration. He was one of my heroes anyhoo! Good one Mimi.
ReplyDeleteOur Mama only puts a little cover up on the bags under her eyes and then mascara. Very rare that we see her in full makeup. Time consuming is right! We loved the different spooky fences. ReplyDeletewhen I ws a teenager I wore all sorts of makeup..now I never wear makeup- none what so ever! Havent since I became a mother 57 years ago! Now I think makeup makes women look older.....wrinkles show up more etc. Meanwhile I'd rather help rescue shelters- what you do for people and animals is wonderful and heart warming! Cheers and consider yourself hugged!

A couple months ago there was a video of a black guy punching a 75 year old boomer repeatedly in the face in a retirement home. Hey, maybe you boomers shouldn't have favored blacks and minorities over your own white children with your political correctness, multiculturalism bullshit? ReplyDeletePerfect poem. I so remember those days. We did tet dressed up to travel - you pretty much dressed up for doing almost everything outside of the house back that involved going somewhere.
That does sound as if it was an adventure! I'm sure they welcomed and appreciated the extra help making preparations for the storm.
Covid has done its part to get me to stop wearing make up, and my face has been thanking me for it ever since! I wear a little mascara, sometimes some eye shadow, and otherwise nothing but moisturizer! It really is freeing!

ReplyDeleteI never wore much makeup, I have decent colour without it and often found in the summer anything I put on would just melt and slide off my face so I gave up and just let people see the real me.
