"Tree Rats" is what Ms. G calls squirrels. Sometimes i see one getting very bold and close to me or to us when we are walking Mr. Cal. One day, Mr. Cal knew he was smelling something, but he wouldn't go around behind the bush where the squirrel actually was.

Poetry Monday was started by Diane at On The Alberta/Montana Border. Jenny at Procrastinating Donkey is on a blog semi-break and her poetry is sorely missed, we hope she comes back soon. Charlotte/Mother Owl participates, and now Karen at Baking in a Tornado is jumping in at least once a month, too. Anyone else is welcome to join in the fun, just let Diane know!
This week the theme is Pigs in Blankets.
(For those who might not know, "pigs in a blanket" is the name for links of pork breakfast sausage wrapped in slightly sweet breakfast pancakes.)
A lady looked out of her window
and much to her surprise
she saw three little piggies
and could not believe her eyes.
They were sitting in her back yard
looking quite forlorn and sad,
she went right out and asked them
what had made them feel so bad.
"We are three little piggies,"
one answered right away,
"we ran from the farm because
this was to be our last day!
The farmer talked of bacon
and it gave us quite a fright,
you look so kind, we'd like to stay
in your yard, if it's all right."
"You're lucky" said the lady
as she smiled at them and then,
she added, "you've come to me,
and I'm a vegetarian!
I'll keep you here in my back yard
and you won't have to roam,
there's plenty of room and you can make
my big old shed your home."
They cleared a space and the piggies
when bedtime rolled around,
they came to her and asked her
a question that was quite sound.
"It's cold out here, you have no hay
for us to make a bed,
do you have a way to keep us warm
in this very nice old shed?"
She had a good solution,
I told you she was nice,
she brought out blankets and she said,
"Now take my wise advice,
wrap up all together
and quite warm you will be."
They did just that, all in a mound,
was quite a sight to see.
She smiled to herself to see them,
she was glad she'd made them room
to stay with her and keep them
safe from pigs usual doom.
Going back into her house
her steps had a bit of zing,
and as she went into her house,
she started in to sing.
"Three Little Pigs in Blankets
wrapped up tight against the cold.
Three Little Pigs in Blankets,
thought their tales had all been told.
Three Little Pigs in Blankets,
in my back yard they will stay,
Three Little Pigs in Blankets 'cause
I haven't any hay!"

What a great poem! I could not find anything about pigs in blankets in my poor brain. I really like the imagery of three snug piglets rolled up in a blanket in her shed.

We call squirrels tree rats too. Mom hates to see them on walks because we lose our minds, do our hunting calls and generally go nuts!
ReplyDeleteOur Lucy sits on the back of the couch, looking into the yard for squirrels. When one makes and appearance, Lucy bolts for the door to be let out so she can chase the varmint out of her territory.

Oh no the poor squirrels just living their little squirrel life. So many do not like them when they are so cute esp when they hold up their little paws like they are begging for a peanut :-). They do provide hours of entertainment for Tommy and Teaghan though lol.

ReplyDeleteThe school cafeteria served pigs in blankets in elementary school and I loved those days! I thought for sure your poem would turn into a Grimms Fairy Tale ending but it didn't. Those piggies indeed were made safe and sound. Now, I want pigs in blankets. :)
