Words for Wednesday was begun by Delores and has become a moveable feast of word or picture or music prompts to encourage us to write stories, poems, or whatever strikes our fancy.
This month, the prompts are being provided by Hilary Melton-Butcher and will appear on Elephant's Child's blog.
This week's prompts are:
- Girth
- Pummeling
- Lizard
- Blooms
- Corridor
And/or
- Pucker
- Beady
- Salubrious
- Cabin
- Barley
An additional prompt from Charlotte (MotherOwl) is to include Signal Green in your take on the prompts.
Have fun.
This was supposed to be "a SALUBRIOUS week at a CABIN in the woods" vacation, as they'd joked with each other when making the plans.
Time to both be a lounge LIZARD, and enjoy the BLOOMS of spring on hikes and trails and get away from it all, they'd both noted.
It all started well enough. They'd packed lightly, leaving him no need to poke fun at the GIRTH of her Signal Green suitcase, the one she liked because it stood out at airport baggage claims. They'd stocked up on favorite snacks, nuts and dried fruit and his first love, sour candies, the ones she didn't like at all because she said they made her mouth PUCKER.
They'd even driven past beautiful fields of wheat, BARLEY and corn, all recently planted and springing up on both sides of the highway.
The first full day their hike brought them to a path that looked like a gloomy CORRIDOR in the woods, lined with old, gnarled trees on both sides which blocked most of the sunlight from filtering through. Deciding to explore anyway, they'd almost immediately been confronted by a BEADY-eyed badger, and they were smart enough to beat a hasty retreat before they got too close.
Arriving back at the cabin, a storm had moved in and rain had been falling ever since, sometimes dripping and drizzling, sometimes PUMMELING, and sometimes somewhere in between but not letting up for 3 days.
Finally they got some sunshine and things started to dry out, but by the time the areas they wanted to explore most were easily accessible again, it was time to head home.
Ruefully they noted the best days of the trip were the drive up and drive back, but promised themselves they'd try again another time.
After all, such flop vacations become the stuff of family legend and, as they both noted, at least they got plenty of rest before they had to go back to work.

Despite the rain, it sounds like a pretty good vacation to me - and being properly rested is always good. Another wonderful use of the prompts.
ReplyDeleteIt is really annoying when someone leaves the toilet seat up!
ReplyDeleteHow disappointing when you go on a long awaited break and the weather doesn't co-operate. Living in England it has often happened to us, but we make the most of it anyway.
Haha what a brilliant way to leave that message :-)
ReplyDeleteHave a lidtastic week mimi 👍
It's too bad those words have to be painted on a mirror to remind people. Put the seat down.
ReplyDeleteToday in history: the toilet seat was invented - even before the toilet.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Why does anyone leave the seat up? It is a cover, covers are to be closed when the object is not in use. Mom really goes nuts when her real estate photos have a seat up!
ReplyDeleteDo NOT leave the seat down in my bathroom! Sounds like a vacation you'll never forget! I'm heading out tomorrow - hopefully, mine won't be as damp!
ReplyDeleteThat's a funny sign but it might be a little too late to be seen in time. Good story too!
ReplyDeleteI can relate to the message about putting the toilet seat down. It's not an issue here. If it's up it's up and if it's down it's down.
ReplyDeleteLove your use of the prompts. Sometimes the drive up and back is the best part of a vacation.
Thank you for joining the Wordless Wednesday Blog Hop.
Have a fabulous Wordless Wednesday. Love and hugs. ♥
LOL Funny sign in the bathroom.
ReplyDeleteToo bad that there aren't many tailors left to thank.
ReplyDeleteHah, I can totally see that message being practical in a shared bathroom 😹
ReplyDeleteThat sign in the bathroom ought also to be up in a family with a buncha sons!
ReplyDeleteDon't leave the seat up hilarious.
ReplyDeleteHugs Cecilia

ReplyDeleteGreat story. My husband does not leave the seat up. He has learned many times not to do that.
thecontemplativecat here.
My husband is 96% good at putting the seat down. Funny picture.

ReplyDeleteYour picture made me laugh, raising only sons, there were times I wanted to write that on all 4 of the bathroom mirrors in the house.
We keep the lid down so the cats don't drink from the bowl. :) Nice story.
ReplyDeleteMirror sign says it all ~ lol

Haha. That's brilliant! I really don't understand why some guys find it so difficult to remember to put the seat down. It was ingrained in me to put it down from a very early age.
ReplyDeleteMy husband learned quickly to put the seat down when we were first married. Without my glasses, all is a blur. I don't put them on to go to the restroom.
ReplyDeleteHusband awoke to me screaming, as I was skinny enough at the time, I fell into the toilet! Not a pleasant situation for either of us!!!

I like your story, but hope they have a sunnier visit next time. Toilet seats aren't an issue here since I live alone.
ReplyDeleteYes, holidays like this one is always better looking back at ;) I think we all had one. So well written.
ReplyDeleteA smudged mirror! What a nuisance!! ;-)
ReplyDeleteBut as always, a well-told story.
