While Becca, Mr. Cal and i walked, we were passed by this father and son. The son had a speaker attached to the handlebar of the bike playing music and he chattered away at his father. He was having a wonderful time.

Grandma and Grandpa were wonderful,
some weekends they would host
my children and my brother's kids,
six cousins, with fun engrossed.
They'd swim, run the dog ragged,
eat them out of house and home,
when the weekend was over,
they didn't want to roam.
Six cousins have fond memories
of wonderful times, and i'm glad,
they still love getting together,
they're there through good and bad.

I have never known any of my cousins. I was in my fifties before I knew I had any, and they live on another continent.
ReplyDeleteI never met my cousins, I know I had two, but they lived in Europe. my children and grandchildren have cousins galore.
ReplyDeleteThere is a Father/Son team in my suburb who ride their bikes together, the son follows the father who calls out the road rules as they go and teaches the son the names of the streets and where to turn, where to watch out for pedestrians etc. Last time I saw them, the father was asking questions, where do we turn from here? etc and the son was answering.
Cousins are like a house with an extension.

It was a fun thing to see a father and a son having a good bicycle ride together. We just need to see more of that with parents today and their young kids.

Mom has a small family and most of the relatives live in upstate New York, so she has never been very close to those cousins. She is close to her one cousin who is also our navigator. They have been like sisters most of their lives.
ReplyDeleteHow sweet dad and son exercising together. That's a nice way to spend time and it promotes a healthy lifestyle. I hope the little boy doesn't become a cough potato like many other kids do as they get older.
ReplyDeleteI am the oldest cousin on my mother's side. My first cousin born I think is about 4 years younger and the youngest cousin is 16 years younger than me. That's quite the age difference. Because of this, I didn't spend a lot of time with them unless I was baby sitting. When my grandparents were alive they'd have big gatherings but I don't believe I attended a single one. My parents hosted the event a few times since but still I haven't gone. I hate that I didn't do that. Maybe next time there's a family reunion, we can go. Have an awwwesome Monday, my friend. ;)
Wish I had been close to my cousins, but family rifts did not allow. That father and son time is golden and will be a perfect memory down the road.

Right now all my aunts & uncles are gone, but I have dozens of cousins and one imparticular is my best friend since we were little. I love having the same memories too about the family! ReplyDeleteMy cousin Joanne is a favorite cousin and so is her daughter Sissy who just retired from the Sheriff's Office as a deputy. Joanne and I once traveled on the Greyhound bus from Colorado to Alabama with our moms and some homemade fried chicken. I don't think we were two hours from home when Joanne and I polished off all that chicken.We were going to our cousin Tommy's wedding. We always laugh about that chicken. Great Sparks and always I love everything you share.
