Words for Wednesday was begun by Delores and has become a moveable feast of word or picture or music prompts to encourage us to write stories, poems, or whatever strikes our fancy.   

This month, the prompts are being provided by River.

Charlotte/Mother Owl's color of the month is Olive Yellow.

Some called him a VAGABOND, or tramp, or worse, beggar.  He preferred Hobo, the traditional term, but like so many things these days, you had to be careful what word you chose.  Migrant worker was the current iteration, so he went with it, finding it easier to do that than enter a long explanation.

After all, he didn't expect to be given anything, he expected to work and earn it.  The fact he moved around for his work as his fancy would CHOOSE didn't make him any less proud of his accomplishments.  He always left behind a job well done, even for employers who were less than honest knowing they'd get theirs someday, and he wanted to be welcomed back to work again by the good ones if he came that way later.

When he couldn't get work, he'd do some TINKERING, making things to sell.  Seldom did he just accept a handout and only once, when he was very ill, did he actually beg for help.  He didn't want to wear out the good will of generous people when he was able to provide for himself.  After all, there might always be another hobo coming along who would need the assistance worse than he did.

SOMETIMES he DREAMED of settling down in one area, but always his feet would get itchy after a while and he'd be on his way.  He knew he was RUNNING from his past but in order not to do too much thinking about it, he preferred to keep on the move.

Today was SUNDAY, a good day in his estimation.  He had a respect for most churches and church people, not letting the bad apples spoil his opinion.  He'd put on his best Olive Yellow shirt and he'd go to the service, letting it be known he was in town looking for work.  Usually he'd get invited to come out to a farm and spend a few days working, often getting a good Sunday dinner into the bargain.

If that didn't happen, sometimes business owners had things they needed done but didn't want to hire on another full time employee, or a local owner of a large home would want garden or yard work done.

Anyway, it gave him a chance to not think too much about days gone by keeping busy with work, and besides eating, that was the main reason he lived this life anyway.
