Identity theft is a scary reality and even memories of near misses can haunt you, like the time someone almost succeeded in getting my phone number transferred to their phone, or the person who used my debit card number for small amounts to see if it would be noticed (it was, right away, and the card shut down).
I have something called Informed Delivery from the US Postal Service, where they send me an email every morning with photos of what will be in the mail that day.
Monday's email had a picture of a mailpiece from a state health insurance agency and addressed to "May Johnson."
There's no May Johnson here, and my first suspicion is someone is trying to establish our address as theirs, and then logic kicks in and i figure perhaps this person lives on our street and the number is just wrong, so i googled the name and our parish (other states have counties, we have parishes).
Bingo, up pops a May Johnson with the parish school system and that's when my memory kicks in, it's Aunt May (i was never told her last name), my daughter-in-law's aunt who was her legal guardian who is with the school IT department and daughter-in-law is still on her aunt's insurance, so they're sending insurance info to daughter-in-law's address of record but in the name of the main insurance holder.
I passed the mail on to daughter-in-law and stood down for the moment, but when it comes to this topic, always be vigilant.
