Well, This Sounds Familiar

The call saying a kitten has been found.  Those are calls i get, and the two just weaned but not quite ready to be altered playing with my shoestrings right now, as well as the other 5, attest to the fact.

It happens all over the country, and i've heard many a strange story.  For us, the ones that traveled in a box from Texas to a warehouse here is one of the stranger ones.  We've also had a few where the mama cat has the babies in the attic of a building, and one falls down into the walls.

This one, though, had me looking twice.  Inside a statue of Abraham Lincoln!?!  Nope, that's never happened around here that we had to call firefighters to climb inside a statue to rescue a kitten.

It's a cute little one, and if it survives, it looks like it has a home.

  1. You have a huge and generous heart, but I'm curious, how many kittens do you have? What do you feel is the maximum number you can care for? Do you ever take in puppies?

  2. Right now, i have nine fosters. Two of those are waiting placement (which should come soon), four will be up for spay/neuter the first week of December and then off to the shelter, two more will go the week after that. The tiniest is still bottle feeding.

We do not keep the kittens we bottle raise. We foster them. If i kept them all, i wouldn't be able to take in more to help the rescue groups.

My rule for taking them in is that the rescue group asking me to raise them must provide for them and find them homes. Once they are weaned and have been altered, they need to be out of my house for me to retain my sanity.

We have had as many as 26 foster kittens, from 9 litters, at one time. All of them were from just born to weaned and moving on in the next few days.

As for puppies, i've never bottle raised any, although i guess i could try. It's probably about the same, except that the kittens potty train at 3-4 weeks, all you have to do is show them the litter box and they are done. Puppies would be more complicated.
