Of Rust and Joint Mortise and Yoyo Garbage Cans, a Random and Happy Tuesday Post

***********************************

It's time once again for a random and happy Tuesday, linking up with Stacy's Random Thoughts at Stacy Uncorked and Sandee at Comedy Plus.

Dr. D went on a tear yesterday, insisting that more stuff she "doesn't have time to deal with" go to the office.  Thank heaven the mediation on one of her cases is next week.  No matter how that goes, at least one legal item will then be off her plate, for better or for worse.  Once it's settled, i can start hinting at getting rid of all of the paperwork she's kept on that case.

And i bought a battery, climbed the rusted ladder of luck (because we are lucky it still holds together), and replaced the battery in the chirping smoke alarm.  By the way, did you know that, if you leave a pound of iron to itself, it will turn into three pounds of rust?

Also, joint mortise, left outside for two years, can still leave a streak in the gravel when the box disintegrates on the way to the garbage and the bag rips.  In case you ever need that info.

Ms. JAI has a broken lid on her garbage can.  It's the kind that the claw picks up, and if there's no lid or the lid is not closed, the operator of the claw is allowed to simply pass it by and not pick up your trash that day.

Yesterday, i called the number to get her lid replaced.  The nice lady put in the order, and said to leave the can at the curb until the contractor can come by and put a new lid on, in one to eight business days.

Before i left for the day, a caring neighbor had pulled her can up to the house for her, and i dutifully hauled it back out for her.  After i left, i called and left her a message about the neighbor, and she said that when she came home, another neighbor had also "helped" by pulling her can in, and she had pulled it back out.

Right now i foresee several days of the can yoyo-ing back and forth.  She could try putting a note on it, but who reads such notes?  Also it would have to be waterproof in case of rain.  If the neighbors keep trying to be helpful, she's going to have a long week, and she may end up wishing she'd just kept the broken lid.

And now, a few more kitchen disasters to make you feel better about your own cooking:

Have a great Tuesday, everyone!

  1. It is lovely that the neighbours are so supportive - but I do hope that the bin lid can be replaced soon. Very soon.

  2. Helping neighbors are a blessing, but ... I so hope the yo-yo-bin is at the curb when the lid replacement team arrives. I learned many new words today reading this. One I could not understand. Please tell, what is a joint mortise? I only get a lot of woodworking by googling this.

  4. Those kitchen disasters make us lose our appetites! Mom saw nasty stuff when she used to work with foreclosed homes. Amazing what humans can do to a kitchen!

  6. Mimi,

Our city made it mandatory a few years back for residents to use their trash containers. I was perfectly content just carrying the bags down each week on the morning they came by. I didn't have to worry about a trash can at the curb. Occasionally an animal might tear a bag open and that was a bother to clean up but still better than having to worry about getting everything into one can. We leave our container at the curb. I'm not bringing that thing up, we're on a little hill, my drive every week. Not to mention the zillion nasty germs that's covering the outside. Nope, it's not going to happen and if ever it's enforced that we must do just that then I don't know what I'll do...probably just cry or scream or both. I don't know but it's in a good place where it's not in the way of traffic or for us to pull in and out. Those kitchen disasters are amazing. I haven't had anything that bad to happen yet but it might tomorrow. The melted cutting board really made me go, "OH, MY!!" That's something that's all too easy to do. One time our youngest daughter put my pizza wheel back into the oven. It was off but it hadn't cooled down enough. When I removed the pan later I found the handle melted. It was made of a hard plastic and definitely not heat-resistant. lol Thanks for musings and giggles.

  8. She's a whirlwind. I wouldn't be able to keep up. I hope she can close that case.

I love the kitchen mishaps. Okay, those are more than mishaps.

  13. I laughed at the mental image of the garbage can going back and forth and back . . .
I'll never say that there are no helpful, caring people again!
My twisted children would LOVE those rolls!

  14. Your kitchen disasters made me cringe for sure, but at least you got an apology for one. I have one of those walk in kitchens (I hate it) Wish it was bigger, but the only way I'll get a bigger one is if we bought a different house (that won't happen anytime soon believe me). I surely hope you have less disasters in your kitchen.

  16. Although I know you need that can to stay at the curb, truth is she's lucky to have nice neighbors who look out for her and try to help.
