Being that i'm more likely to pray for a blessing for you than to wish you good luck, i tend to agree with Obi-Wan, "In my experience, there's no such thing as luck."
Then again, there's Cormac McCarthy's take on it, "You never know what worse luck your bad luck has saved you from."
And there's always this:
That is one song i can relate to rather often.
If there is luck, it's scarce in these parts. Humphrey the Honda is probably a total loss, Cicero suddenly needed repairs last week and Jalopy this week, we owe the tax man, we just found out yesterday that our escrow account with the mortgage company is short, and there are some outstanding bills that will come up soon. It's one of those cases where i'm dancing as fast as i can, but the music is outpacing me.
Good things still happen, though, and i consider that i'm blessed beyond measure no matter what trials may come our way.
As for good luck charms, talismans, wearing your lucky shorts, doing the same ritual over and over, they've never seemed to work for me. There's a poker chip in my wallet, but it is a reminder of a sermon once preached at a church i attended. The theme of the sermon was about being "all in" for The Lord, and the poker chips were passed out to be a tangible something to hold on to when tempted to take short cuts in your spiritual life.
The only symbolic thing that might count in a discussion like this for me would be dimes. Sometimes in the South a kiss is called a Yankee Dime, and once in a while Sweetie teases me and holds out a dime, asking for a kiss. When i find a dime in a very unusual place, nowhere near any other change, i consider it a reminder from heaven that i'm not alone, and i do keep those. They are all in a special box on my dresser.
In honor of St. Patrick and the Irish, one of my favorite Irish blessings:
Here's to your coffin!
May your coffin have six handles of finest silver!
May your coffin be carried by six fair young maids!
And may your coffin be make of finest wood
from a 100-year-old tree,
that I'll go plant tomorrow!

I love to read what you have written about luck and good luck charms. Wishing you a blessed new week!
ReplyDeleteWhen I look at the big picture, I feel very lucky.
ReplyDeleteWe are agreement about luck, I don't place much stock in it, but I do like your dimes collection, that's something different, little reminders! :-) I am sorry it is such a hard time for you financially right now, sometimes it feels like you are up to your "ears" in alligators, but I've never seen a time yet when God won't help you pull through if you are doing your part, and we know you are! Trust and keep dancing! :-) I love that Irish Blessing, it's one I haven't heard before.
ReplyDeleteI don't believe in luck either. I think things just happen and they happen to all of us at one time or another. It just appears more is happening to you right now. I know this will pass at some point.
ReplyDeleteI'll add you in my prayers that the path you need to take becomes clear to you.
Have a blessed day, my friend. ♥♥♥
I am glad you still realize how blessed you are despite life's setbacks. I love that you save dimes when you find them. I also like the poker chip idea.
ReplyDeleteI've always loved that Irish blessing. Take care.
ReplyDeleteThere is some doom and gloom hanging around this month. I have a dear person in some terrible straights...maybe life threatening...and I cannot help her, even though I have offered money. We together are going to have to wait out the days on this.
ReplyDeleteWE just have to count our blessings and be glad for the things that we do have.
ReplyDeleteWhen things are good, I think luck is on my side, but when things aren't so good, I think God has forsaken me. I guess I can't have it both ways. I'm working on it.
ReplyDeleteSo informative! I had never heard a dime described in such a way. I love the poker chip analogy.
ReplyDeleteI remember an old song "A penny a kiss a penny a hug, goanna put all the pennies in a big brown jug" :)
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of the poker chip!! All In - yes that is how we should be. And I think you're right about the concept of special things being "reminders", more than that they are imbibed with any actual power. I consider certain things, such as the tigers eye I carry in my purse, as just encouragement towards maintaining the commitments I have made to myself.
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with you about luck - luck seems to avoid me at all costs, whereas Murphy and his Law tend to nip at my heels. ;)
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your dime story - and that you keep any dimes found in unusual places in a special box. That is very very cool!!
And I LOVE that you have a poker chip to remind yourself to be 'all in' for The Lord. I love those kinds of sermons!
