Words for Wednesday was begun by Delores and has become a moveable feast of word or picture or music prompts that encourages us to write stories, poems, or whatever strikes our fancy.

This month, the prompts are being provided by Elephant's Child.

This week's prompts are, first two phrases:

  1. Bitten off more than he can chew (taken on a task which is too much for him)
  2. Diamond in the rough (a person who is generally of good character but lacks manners, education, or style)

And/or

  1. Welcome
  2. Trigger
  3. Moving
  4. Taller
  5. Essential
  6. Expecting

He was like a kid in a candy shop.  They were EXPECTING delivery of the horse he had purchased now that the barn was up and functional.

He could hardly wait to WELCOME the new member of the family, having told her the horse was a Diamond In The Rough.

As usual, she was a bit worried he had Bitten Off More Than He Could Chew.  Of course, he always managed to pull off his dreams somehow, so she made ready for TRIGGER, as he had named the horse, MOVING in.

They'd gotten all the ESSENTIAL equipment ready that they were told you would need to keep a horse.

The truck pulling a horse trailer rolled in, finally, and the driver led the horse out.

It was TALLER than she had thought it would be, and although he'd seen the horse once before, he was a bit overwhelmed by the size of it at that moment as well.  The fact that he was going to have to be taking care of it and teach her her how to help crossed his mind.  He figured there was no time like the present, so he squared his shoulders, stepped forward to take the lead rope, and led the horse to her.

He had given her some pieces of apple to feed the horse so they could make friends.  "Hold a piece of apple flat on the palm of your hand," he told her, and she did.  As he lead the horse near, it shied a bit, then spied the apple.

Trigger stepped over and ever so gently took the apple slice, ate it, then stuck his nose back on her hand, like he was looking for more.  She smiled at how soft his nose felt, and it tickled her hand, so she put another piece on her palm, and again the horse took it.  As he did, she reached out to pet him, and he held still and let her.

They didn't know it yet, but it was the start of a beautiful friendship.

  2. That is a lovely story. I reminds me of my favourite horse. He was an ex racehorse then showjumper who was overworked and started to have lameness problems and no longer wanted. I got him sound and we became the best of friends for the next 22 years. I had other horses before and since, but none like him.
