A Yummy Thankful

Ten Things of Thankful is taking a break, and i hope Kristi and all of the other regulars are having a great time.

My thankful this week is that i was able to use the turkey carcass from Christmas to boil up stock, and the meat and some sausage and other ingredients to make a gumbo.

Boil your own stock from a roasted turkey, it tastes better that way.

Turkey and sausage, as opposed to a seafood gumbo.

Saute those veggies!

Lots of gumbo, to be served over rice.

There's nothing quite like gumbo, especially as the weather gets cooler, and i haven't been doing a lot of cooking since my business has gotten so much bigger.  The family was very glad for it, even Red-headed Alec is coming by today for a bowl.

Tuesday Coffee Chat, Thanksgiving Edition

Rory Bore at Ink Interrupted hosts the Tuesday Coffee Chat, and this week the topic is:   Update your challenge.  Or in honour of American Thanksgiving, tell us what you're thankful for right now. 






As per my challenge, i have been completing a Spanish lesson every day.  There's really not much more to say about it than that, i will either be able to communicate somewhat in the language before i die, or not.  If i can't, it won't be for lack of trying.

On to Gratitude!

Yes, i'm thankful and grateful that i can study my lessons.

We are all thankful that Little Girl is back home, a certified army medic.  She was rather antsy the first days, since no one was regimenting her and she didn't have to wear her uniforms.  She wore them some of the time anyway and forced herself to keep to a schedule to try to adapt.  Monday morning she began yelling at Red-headed Alec, "Get up!  It's time for a run!  I told you we would work out together this morning, get your sorry self out of bed!"  He smiled and got up, and they ran.

Happy and thankful only begins to describe how we feel about the kittens, now at the shelter and up for adoption.  As of now, there's no news, but i will be working there tomorrow and can update on whether any have been adopted and gone home or pre-adopted and will be going home soon.  It's such a joy to be able to help animals this way.

This week is a very, very busy one and i am most thankful for the work.  Everyone wants their house cleaned just before the holiday, which keeps me jumping, and keeps me able to pay the bills!

Right now i am so thankful for my family.  Yes, i know they are mostly grown, i still love having the kids living here.  They and their attitudes and always wanting to talk about current events and happenings in their lives keeps me young.  Bigger Girl is tutoring a young lady in calculus, and the young lady in question is deathly allergic to cats, so Bigger Girl bought a hazmat suit to wear when with her.  That would only happen here, and i'm grateful because it makes me smile.

#1 Son is working two jobs right now, and i'm thankful he is showing such initiative to pay a few bills that will come due for him soon.  

#2 Son and Daughter-in-law Becky are still "So Happy Together" and i am very grateful for that.  They are young, and that works both for them and against them.  For now, one day at a time.

We get to go to Grandma and Grandpa's house for Thanksgiving and see everyone just like we always have, and that's a huge gratitude, that we are all still here and able to get together after another year.

Also, i'm thankful i started my Christmas cards early so as not to be rushed later.  It worked!

Several Thankful Things

My Saturday gratitude list:

Today i am grateful i was able to get all the medications at the shelter straight last night, and make sure every cat that needed medication got it.  Everyone else was at the shelter fundraiser, so i was on my own and a few of the cats had been moved to different rooms or cages, but i figured it all out (thanks in part to microchips -- do you have any idea how hard it can be to figure out which black and white cat in that room gets the medication when there are three black and white cats in there?).

Today i am grateful the drizzling rain did not start until well after Trick-or-Treat hours were over last night, and that the actual rain storms we are expecting will not be until late this afternoon and this evening.

Today i am grateful i got nosey and asked about Dr. Bea's kittens that i am fostering being accepted into the shelter to be adopted out.  It turned out the request Dr. Bea's staff put in never arrived, so they are resending it and Ms. Carol has said that she will take them in a few weeks after they've had their shots.  Without my asking, Ms. Carol would never have known they wanted the kittens in the program, and they would have thought the request was received and denied.  Considering how much work Dr. Bea has done for the shelter, that wouldn't have been a good thing.

Today i am grateful i have a day off work, so i can catch up on laundry and ironing and cleaning and cooking at my own house!

Thankful Thursday

Today is a long work day.  Get there before 7am so i can get the kids to school, and then come back and do the laundry and cleaning.

So i am thankful:

     that Bigger Girl can take Little Girl to school for me on days like this
     that Little Girl got to get her project for extra credit done last night
     that we seem to have finished the big car repairs for the time being
     that prayer meeting last night was concentrated on prayer for more understanding between peoples here and around the world
     that the rain stopped
     that...

"Hey, guess what!" Red-Headed Alec said.

What? i asked.

"Your #2 Son challenged me to a grip fight!  He said he could break out of any grip I could put him in, because he's so skinny."

Note:  the kid is a bean pole, really.

And? i asked.

"All I had to do was grab him and hold him over my head, and he couldn't move!"  Red-Headed Alec grinned from ear to ear.

"Yeah, we were laughing and telling him no to drop him!" Little Girl said.

Yes, i said, please don't do that -- i'd have to pay the medical bills!

So, i'm thankful Red-Headed Alec did not drop #2 Son when his mouth got away from him.
