"Honey, is there anything you want to tell me?" she asked, with the lilt in her voice letting him know she knew something he either didn't and should have, or did and was hiding.
Deciding that it was best to play dumb until he could actually figure out if he'd done something or not, he tried to keep his voice natural as he responded, "Um, no, not that I know of."
"Dad's in trouble, Dad's in trouble!" one of the kids sang out from the landing at the top of the stairs where they were all watching, anticipation building as they waited to go down for mealtime, to which he growled, "No comments from the peanut gallery!"
Smiling, she pulled out an envelope from the stack of mail lying oh-so-innocently on the table where it usually wasn't, looking for all the world like she'd accidentally left it there when she was busy; he knew exactly what that envelope meant and looked down with his "Okay, so I'm guilty look" such as he always put on when he had dug into dessert before dinner.
The look never fooled her before, it wouldn't fool her now, but they both laughed as he said, "Rime rorry!" in his best Scooby Doo voice, then added, "I try to stop at those red lights where the cameras are, but doggone it, sometimes you just can't stop in time and I'll try to be more careful."
"Well, you better," her voice said, but her arms around him and the smooch they shared showed she really was more teasing that anything, as she knew those tricky lights herself; an "Eeeew, they're kissing!" from upstairs brought laughter and another smooch, followed by kids running down the stairs, the signal for suppertime.

It's Angel Sammy's Poetry Day! This week's image and my poem:
I tend a pretty garden
Upon a big estate.
I do not own the big house
That sits beyond the gate.
No I live in the cottage,
Further toward the dell,
And truth be told, that is
Where I'd much rather dwell.
I work in the pretty garden
For the Lady and the Gent,
And what they pay me to garden
They think it is well spent.
If I lived such a life as they
Even though they are rich,
I could not sleep so well at night
And those clothes would make me itch!
Thus I tend to the flowers
Their housekeeper is my wife,
And we enjoy our cottage,
We love our simpler life!

Love the happy family story. Nice fence and gate. I too prefer a simple, peaceful life. Have a beautiful day.
ReplyDeleteLOVE your story - and your poem.
ReplyDeleteThat iron gate is magnificent. Thanx Mimi.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
There are no cameras for red lights here, but Mom lived in Germany for 10 years and they had cameras at traffic signals and along the road for speeding. She did not like them because sometimes things happen but you can try to explain to a police officer, with a camera there is no explaining. Have a great day!
