Words for Wednesday was begun by Delores and has become a moveable feast of word or picture or music prompts to encourage us to write stories, poems, or whatever strikes our fancy.
This month, the prompts are being provided by Margaret Adamson and her friend Sue Fulcher, with some pictures by her friend Bill Dodds, and are posted by Elephant's Child.
The prompts this week are:
stoic
veisalgia
fiasco
table
throwing
ilex
and/or
ferrule
gelato
brewing
indigo
irons
waterfall
"My brother, while I am most obliged to you for your indulging me in spending a night in your beautiful abode, could I possibly request that you lower the timbre of your voice just a smidge, as I seem to have a touch of VEISALGIA from my outing last night."
Mort sat at the TABLE while Frank bustled about his kitchen BREWING coffee. He gave Mort a stern look that was ignored, and said, "Mort, there's nothing STOIC about you, is there?"
"Well, I will admit that last evening with the lovely young lady I was trying to court did not turn out as I had planned..."
"You don't say," Frank's voice was drier than a martini.
"And I have always worn my heart on my sleeve in such matters," Mort ended his sentence, and Frank finally gave in and laughed.
"Well, here's a brotherly hint or two for the next time you are wanting to court a young lady, as you put it. First, don't drink so much that you end up playing a prank on her friend and THROWING the woman's purse into the ILEX bush. Second, don't eat all of her GELATO. And finally, remember that it's illegal to go wading in the WATERFALL pool in the atrium at the hotel."
"Especially," Mort added morosely, "when you are wearing colored socks that fade so easily. My feet are dyed INDIGO this morning."
"That would have been the least of your troubles if I hadn't been following a murder suspect and ended up at the same place as you. The 'young lady' you were 'courting' was ready to call the police and they wouldn't have hesitated to clap you in IRONS, even if you are my brother. In fact, thinking about it, I'm still tempted to go get a bamboo pole with a metal FERRULE at the end of it and give you one of those spankings our dad seemed to have forgotten!"
Mort looked at Frank, and his eyes glistened. "Thank you. Really, thank you. I shouldn't have gone out last night, and you are right. Is there anything I can do to show you I appreciate what you've done, keeping me out of worse trouble last night?"
"Actually," Frank hesitated. "There's a crime I'm trying to solve. Well, I am starting to think it's more than one. After you shower and eat some breakfast and start feeling better, I'll tell you some of what I am thinking. There may be a way you can use your comedic wit and charm to get some answers out of a suspect who isn't going to let me get near her."
