Words for Wednesday was begun by Delores and has become a moveable feast of word or picture or music prompts that encourages us to write stories, poems, or whatever strikes our fancy.

This month, the prompts are being provided by River at Drifting Through Life.

This week's words are:

1. kitchen
2. long
3. modicum
4. notice
5. overly
6. perfectly

and/or:

1. quivering
2. roasted
3. strawberry
4. theory
5. umbrage
6. vestige

His nose picked up the savory smell LONG before he got to the apartment, much less the KITCHEN, and what his nose told him had the rest of him QUIVERING with delight.

As he crossed the floor heading toward the stove, he was determined to get himself at least small sample of the PERFECTLY ROASTED onions he knew would be in the big black cast iron Dutch oven, along with potatoes and celery and a chunk of beef so tender it would melt in his mouth, with a gravy even better than his mama used to make.

So determined was he to snatch a taste that he didn't NOTICE she was standing in the pantry closet.  The fact that the kitchen was a typical small apartment size kitchen, about the size of a postage stamp, and the pantry closet was not a walk in, tells you just how OVERLY engrossed he was in getting himself that small sample.

"I had a THEORY," she said with a mischievous grin, surprising him so much that he dropped the Dutch oven lid with a clang before he had even gotten it up by an inch.  "Knowing you don't have a MODICUM of decency about snatching samples before dinner is served, I made you a small appetizer plate."

As she held out a plate of some simple stuffed tomatoes to him, he said, "I should take UMBRAGE at your accusation."  Then he took the tomatoes, ate one, smiled, and said, "I should, but I don't, because I can't.  You know me too well."

They laughed and he offered her a tomato, which she accepted before turning back to the pantry.  Then he said, "So, where you do you think I should look for the last VESTIGE of my dignity after being caught red-handed this way?"

"How about at the bottom of the STRAWBERRY trifle I made for dessert?" she suggested, which about sent him into orbit.

  4. Last time I was in the laundromat, a bad thunderstorm rolled through and the power went out. I was literally folding my very last piece of laundry when it died, so I lucked out. But there were a lot of very unhappy people around me!

  5. The laundromat always seems like a busy place. Those machines are much nicer (and newer) than our local laundromat.

  6. I may find time to try this today...so not reading your marvelous take on it.

  7. Yours is so much more smooth than mine but here goes...

The dog crouched quivering at the front of the kitchen fire hoping no one would notice of him. He had sidled in across the tiled floor taking shelter from the cold rains, his long fur matted and dirty and his pawprints evidence of his entry. There was the vestige of a perfectly roasted chicken and part of a strawberry pie on the table, aromas drifting by his nose. There was not a modicum of human sound and thus no one to take umbrage if he placed his forepaws on the table top. He was fearful but not overly so. The theory was to shove the chicken with his nose to the opposite side of the table without making it fall to the floor and then carefully lift it from the platter, that was the theory, anyway.

  8. Just to let you know Mimi, I may not be able to write my blog anymore. Somehow this thing called widget took over my blog and I've had many people try to change things bit to avail. But I'll still be checking on you my friend. You can't get rid of me that easy. LOL See ya.

    1. Paul, it may be that you will have to start a new blog. It's a pain in the posterior, but at least you could keep going. If all of your photos are saved in Google photos, those could be used to do headers and pages about your cruises.

If you don't feel up to that, i understand, and i really do hope you get your own blog back somehow.

  10. Mimi,

I haven't been inside a laundry mat in decades. Those machines look so big from what I remember them being in the late 70s and early 80s.

Your story absolutely made me lick my lips. Mmmm, you brought the scents of the dinner cooking right off the computer screen to my nose. :) Great job!

  11. I've not done my laundry there in years and years. I remember getting my first washer and dryer when I was in my 20s. I thought I'd won the lottery. I did spend a lot of years doing my laundry at the laundromat though.

I always love your stories. You do them so very well.

Have a fabulous Wordless Wednesday. ♥

  13. I love your story! I know too, how a fragrance wafting from a kitchen can entice someone in for just a peek or taste. Excellent use of the words :)

  14. For some reason I just love going to laundromats! I guess the only times I have needed to go is when I lived in Key West briefly and it was a very relaxing, easy going time for me.

    Thanks for sharing!
