What in the world...

...possesses a goat to run away?

This is a story for animal lovers, and it struck me because i am wondering what was going through the goat's mind when it all started.

Curley the Goat, an Angora, was being unloaded at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, for the Christmas Eve Nativity Live service. Somehow her halter came loose as her owner, Jim Aakre, was trying to get the straw off of her and make her presentable for church.

She took that as a cue to run for it, and next thing you know, goat on the lam.

They searched for 3 hours, but Curley was long gone, and for the next 25 days they heard reports of her, but she seemed to have a wandering spirit and didn't stay long enough in one place to be caught.

Then, she turned up on Tony Loomer's farm, about 6 miles south of the city. He went out to feed his own horses and goats, and saw that he had a guest.

Curley was wet, cold, and had lost weight. When Loomer came close to give her some feed and see if she was friendly, she offered no objection and went into the warm barn when he led her there.

Jim Aakre and his wife, Karen, were ecstatic to have her back. Because it was too cold out for the still chilly and tired looking animal to ride in the bed of a truck, she got her first car ride. She rode home in style, in the back seat in Jim's arms.

All of this brings me back to wondering what in the world was going through the goat's mind when she decided to make a run for it in the first place.

Did she not like the idea of being at church? Did she know about the ancient practice of using a scapegoat, and she was afraid her time was up? Was it stage fright, maybe?

Well, we won't ever really know, but it makes me wonder why animals take it in their heads to run off at times.

No matter, really, now that Curley is back home. She had a miserable enough time, i think, out in the Minnesota winter, that she won't be trying it again any time soon.

Just to be sure, though, don't mention church to her again.

  1. Maybe the goat had a reason for not wanting to go to church. Maybe he was atheist. Or Jewish. Or just had stage fright.

  3. Sheer freedom. I think I'd make a run for it too, if I was kept penned up. Maybe. :)

Actually, I think he was just in the wrong Christmas venue. He was probably searching for the production of Scrooge... he was playing the part of The Goat of Christmas Past. ;)
