Monthly Poetry Group: Go Away

 ***********************************

It's time for the Monthly Poetry Group, hosted by Karen at Baking in a Tornado.  Participants write a poem about a topic one of us chose.  This month, Karen chose Go Away.  Be sure to go check out all the poems.

Go Away!

If you are wanting to knock on my door,

please do not think i'm being a boor.

I simply have a few things to say

before we part and I wish you good day.

If you're under 18 and forced to go

from door to door, candy boxes in tow,

they used to make me do that, too,

and I hated it, so I'll buy from you.

If you're over 18, don't care what you're sellin',

for your truck and trash, no money i'm shellin',

you're told old for a sympathy sale, I say,

so i'm asking you, please go away.

If you're with the Boy Scouts, have a magazine

full of fun things to order, then peachy keen!

You're a good egg, so come about

and I'll place an order to help you out.

If you have a new business such as tree trimming

and are trying to get your appointment book brimming,

Don't come by my house today,

I'm asking you to please go away.

If you are a Girl Scout with cookies to sell,

get over here NOW because I can tell

you and I will be very good friends,

I'll order year after year without end!

If you're the political campaign canvasser,

I can tell you, I'll take a "passer,"

don't make me hunt down my pest spray,

just turn around and go away.

If you're a kid earning money for summer plans,

come on by and somehow i'll lend you a hand,

I used to supply candy for such a scheme

and our neighbor kids paid that way for swim team!

If you're there at my door to preach to me,

I've already met Jesus and love Him, you see,

I'm not trying to be rude but I must say nay,

I'll smile and wave as you go your way.

If you're under 18, or giving free beer,

I'll be glad to have you stop by here.

If you're anything else, i'm the wrong prey,

it's time for you to go away!

  1. Smiling at your poem. You are more generous than me, I suspect I would tell most of them to go away.

  2. Funny poem, you are softer than I - we did more of this when I was a kid, and I hated!!! it, and have let my own kids say no-thanks to participating in these activities.
Luckily we do not have a lot of this here. We have trick-or-treaters - and the Witnesses on their rounds, and the occasional collectors - grown ups - for this and that. I always say no to those.

  3. Brilliant Mimi, they are pretty well what I would say, but having 60 steps up to my door I'm usually let in peace!

  4. I like your poem. Lol! They will have no chance because whenever I hear any "salesperson" calling out at the gate, I will just make believe that there is no one in the house to avoid all the awkwardness of saying "no" and telling them to go away.

  5. I love both your inspiration and your poem. When you're done ordering from those Girl Scouts, send them my way!

  8. We used to have a "warning line" here, when door-to-door people came to the first unit from the main road, people further down were warned they were on the way, so we could choose to answer or pretend to not be home. It fell apart when some people moved away.
