Words for Wednesday was begun by Delores and has become a moveable feast of word or picture or music prompts to encourage us to write stories, poems, or whatever strikes our fancy.    

This month, the prompts are being provided by Hilary Melton-Butcher  and will appear on Elephant's Child's blog.

This was supposed to be "a SALUBRIOUS week at a CABIN in the woods" vacation, as they'd joked with each other when making the plans.

Time to both be a lounge LIZARD, and enjoy the BLOOMS of spring on hikes and trails and get away from it all, they'd both noted.

It all started well enough.  They'd packed lightly, leaving him no need to poke fun at the GIRTH of her Signal Green suitcase, the one she liked because it stood out at airport baggage claims.  They'd stocked up on favorite snacks, nuts and dried fruit and his first love, sour candies, the ones she didn't like at all because she said they made her mouth PUCKER.

They'd even driven past beautiful fields of wheat, BARLEY and corn, all recently planted and springing up on both sides of the highway.

The first full day their hike brought them to a path that looked like a gloomy CORRIDOR in the woods, lined with old, gnarled trees on both sides which blocked most of the sunlight from filtering through.  Deciding to explore anyway, they'd almost immediately been confronted by a BEADY-eyed badger, and they were smart enough to beat a hasty retreat before they got too close.

Arriving back at the cabin, a storm had moved in and rain had been falling ever since, sometimes dripping and drizzling, sometimes PUMMELING, and sometimes somewhere in between but not letting up for 3 days.

Finally they got some sunshine and things started to dry out, but by the time the areas they wanted to explore most were easily accessible again, it was time to head home.

Ruefully they noted the best days of the trip were the drive up and drive back, but promised themselves they'd try again another time.

After all, such flop vacations become the stuff of family legend and, as they both noted, at least they got plenty of rest before they had to go back to work.
