Words for Wednesday was begun by Delores and has become a moveable feast of word or picture or music prompts to encourage us to write stories, poems, or whatever strikes our fancy.    

This month, the prompts are being provided by Hilary Melton-Butcher  and will appear on Elephant's Child's blog..

"And why are you LURKing about?" he asked, but as always, he stretched the word "lurking" out in its pronunciation, trying to make it sound the way someone had pronounced it in one of his favorite movie scenes.

"I'm not," she answered, "I'm getting the dough for tonight's bread ready for the oven, and please watch where you step, Ruthie scattered a bit of FLOUR on the floor earlier and she swept it, but she doesn't always get it all and I haven't had time to re-sweep."

"Where is she?"

"I sent her out to pick BUTTERCUPS to put in the vase on the table tonight.  She felt badly about spilling something in the kitchen again and I thought it would take her mind off it if she decorated the table instead of helping in here."

"Good idea.  I'm heading up on the ladder to clear out the DRAINPIPE again, the gutters overflowed with the last rain.  All the BIRCH leaves really pile up."

"Before you do, could you raise the window for a breeze?  The weather is still nice enough, not too hot...yes...thank you!"

He'd raised the window and because this one often didn't stay open of its own accord, he propped the stick under the center MULLION and left to go hunt up his ladder.

Meanwhile, Ruthie's AMBER head bobbed among the buttercups as she regained her usually cheerful demeanor.  She planned the table in her mind, seeing the Signal Green tablecloth and the large bouquet of yellow buttercups in the center.  She was much better at decorating than at cooking, or her SPELLING lessons (which needed work but she tried to put that thought off until later).  

She really wanted to grow up to paint, or draw, or decorate homes, or something, she wasn't sure yet.  Meanwhile, she knew it was good to learn math and reading and even cooking, but that didn't mean she had to enjoy them as much as the fun things she loved to do.

The sound of the TRAIN at the crossing brought her mind back from daydreaming and she noticed the LIGHT was, not exactly fading yet, but certainly it was about time to get back and get the table set.  She gathered her bouquet and headed home trying to decide which of her mother's flower vases would go best with the tablescape she was planning.
