It was a blessing i got to Carl's early yesterday.
He was still asleep and as i tapped at the door, he popped up and ran to open it, saying, "Power went out last night, no alarm, I overslept!"
This rendered my usual first question, do you have work, pointless so i moved on and asked what time he needed to be there.
"Seven to eleven," he responded, then over his shoulder, "should I eat first?"
Depends on whether you need a shower, i told him and he responded in the affirmative, then headed for the kitchen. Food always comes first with him, so i followed to make his sandwich.
He gathered some breakfast items then disappeared, and when i took his lunch to his room he was just coming out of the shower, his hair looking rather wild and wooly so i encouraged the use of a comb.
While doing that, he told me about the power outage the night before. "The transformer blew up! It was loud, and they came and fixed it."
That's their job, i noted, then told him if he was only working until 11am, he shouldn't need the ice vest as the temperatures have dropped.
"But I have to have it, it was hot the other day!" he protested.
Have you stepped out this morning? It's in the 60's, i told him, but still he protested and so i prepared his ice vest.
His next question was, "Which shoes should I wear?"
The ones that fit best and feel good, i told him, although i know all his shoes are very worn and probably none of them actually feel so great on right now.
He chose a pair and headed for the kitchen, then i chased him down with his apron and got there in time.
Carl had "all the things" out for breakfast, so i picked up the milk and coffee creamer to put them back in the fridge and noticed there wasn't enough of the creamer left to save. He saw me taking the creamer container to the recycle bin and said, "Wait, there's still some in there!"
I asked if he wanted it in his coffee and he said yes, so i poured it on in, it was less than a teaspoon. No amount is to small to save or use when you are Carl.
"I went to a volunteer fair this weekend," he noted, and began talking about opportunities to volunteer. He likes doing such things, it's just difficult for him to figure out how to get plugged in and people sometimes have a hard time working with him because of his communication problems. I need to start encouraging him to come to the shelter with me on Friday evening again.
Carl ate in record time (for him) and came back in his room to finish getting ready, stopping as he went through the room to pick up dirty clothes i'd already gathered to where i wanted them and trying to straighten things as he went along, creating more havoc.
Shoo! i smiled at him, when i get here, this becomes my job.
He nodded and went to put his ice chest in the car. He came back saying, "You're right, I won't need the vest today."
Too late, you already have it, i told him and then he said, "Glasses?" I passed him what looked like children's sunglasses you would win as a prize at the fair, but hey, they're sunglasses and he doesn't care. Then, "Hat?"
On your bed, half under the covers, i haven't gotten to stripping your bed yet, i told him.
He grabbed the hat and headed to work.
How about some funnies.
Have a blessed and beautiful Tuesday, everyone!

But toilets DO flush during power outage, just as there's still water in the tap - Ours do anyway. Water is here pumped into a tower or something similarly tall, and the pressure will make it go through the pipes to our homes. There's only a problem if the power outage goes on for very long, so that the water reservoir in the tower runs empty. And I suspect that there are a generator to help out in that case (single households do not as a rule have generators - only hospitals and really big animal farms and suchlike).
ReplyDeleteThat's interesting ... how do toilets work with no electricity? Bicycles too? And motorbikes and cars?
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
