Sparks, the brainchild of Annie of McGuffy's Reader, is on hiatus, so here's an Inspiring Quote of the Week in her honor.

Poetry Monday was started by Diane at On The Alberta/Montana Border She and Jenny at Procrastinating Donkey take turns providing a theme each week.   Charlotte/Mother Owl almost always participates, too.  This week the theme is Favorite Teachers.

My favorite teacher was Mr. Z
He really tried to instill in me
And in every other student he’d see
A deep, deep love of learning.

If we finished our work on time each day
He had a very special way
To reward us for our work, He’d say,
You all are great at learning!

Then would come our favorite part,
He read us The Hobbit from the start,
He really knew how to touch each heart
And keep us loving learning.

He timed the amount of reading he’d do
So the book would finally get through
On the very last day of school, woohoo!
He rewarded a love of learning.

  11. Your poem reminds me of when my youngest was in first grade, his teacher had me come in and do the reading of a book of her choice to the class. How I loved looking at those kids, sitting still for a change, enthralled in the story.

  17. Mr. Z sounds like a wonderful (and smart) man - he knew how to motivate his students and that's a gift not all teachers have.

  19. I really like your rhyming scheme in this poem, Mimi - I must try it! One of my English teachers had a large classroom with a stage at one end, with her desk on it so that she normally looked down at her class. On Friday afternoons, last period, however, she would sit on the edge of the stage, swinging her legs, and would read aloud to us - The Secret Garden. That inspired in me not only a love of ready, but also of story-telling. Happy days!
