Words for Wednesday was begun by Delores and has become a moveable feast of word or picture or music prompts that encourages us to write stories, poems, or whatever strikes our fancy.

This month, the prompts are being provided by River at Drifting Through Life.

This week's words are:

1. shutdown
2. wreck
3. hairclip
4. marked
5. old school
6. brewery

and/or:

1. release
2. hell-no!
3. cherries
4. insignificant
5. coffee
6. almost

"Mabel, did you hear the BREWERY had another SHUTDOWN?" Edna asked her back yard neighbor as they both stepped out to hang clothes on their respective lines.

"Oh, HELL-NO!" Mabel yelled.  "This is gettin' ridiculous!  What happened now?"

"When you are done hangin' your clothes, come on in for some COFFEE and I'll tell you all about it," Edna answered.

"I'll be right over, after I readjust my HAIRCLIP.  It keeps saggin' and it makes my hair look like a WRECK.  I swear I need another hair trim and it seems like ALMOST yesterday when I had the last one."

Both ladies finished up with this step of their laundry chore, and Mabel went in to fix her hair and grab a couple of pieces of the pie that she'd made from the CHERRIES that grew on the fence line tree.  There was nothing like Edna's coffee and Mabel's pies, other ladies used to say, and the two usually knew the best town gossip as well.

"So what's goin' on this time?" Mabel asked as the two sat down at the oilcloth covered kitchen table to eat and drink and talk, their three favorite things.

Edna began, "Well, Joe asked for a work RELEASE today so he could go back to the doctor, you remember, he's been havin' trouble with his lumbago.  He had MARKED it on his time card that he was gonna be out.  Anyways, they asked him to come in for the mornin' since his appointment wasn't until afternoon.  While he was there, that newfangled machine they just got went plumb crazy again, spewin' beer all over instead of into the bottles."

Mabel interrupted with, "Land sakes!  As my Daddy used to say, the OLD SCHOOL way may be slower, but we know it always worked!"

"I know just what you mean," Edna agreed.  "Joe barely got to his appointment, they almost didn't want to let him go but he told them he was goin' and he'd be back as soon as he could.  They think his lumbago is INSIGNIFICANT compared to keepin' the place going, but if they don't have the good workers like my Joe and your Ben in good health, they ain't gonna have anythin'!"

"You got that right," Mabel agreed.  "And how did you find out about it?"

"Oh, Joe stopped off here to grab his lunch on the way to his appointment, but he's done with that and back at work by now," Edna said.  "They'll probably have another late night, all of them.  Here, have another cup of coffee, we may as well relax a while, no need to make an early supper tonight."

"That's fine by me," Mabel sighed with satisfaction.  "I'd just as soon have a nice, long afternoon chat as go swelter over a hot stove!"

  2. Love the story. It sounds the perfect way to spend a bit of time with a neighbour. Living on a farm I don't get the opportunity to have a natter over the garden fence. I like the WW too.
