"It's an odd thing this year, this collision of Valentine's Day and Ash Wednesday, but in a way, how beautiful, as it's the Incarnation which shows best the heart of G-d."
The Reverend, with an almost beatific smile on her face, spoke about forgiveness, about living in light, about not hiding those things we know we shouldn't have done.
We sang the first 3 verses of "Just As I Am," and did a responsive reading of Psalm 51, the penitent's psalm.
The Reverend put the ashes on us with the words, "Repent and believe the Gospel," which was a refreshing positive change from the more traditional, "Know you are dust and unto dust you shall return."
Then she said, "Since none of us are exempt," and signaled someone in the congregation to come put the ashes on her.
We sang the last two verses of "Just As I Am," the Reverend said, "Remember you've been forgiven so go out there and try not to mess it up, at least for an hour!" and as we all laughed, we were dismissed from what was, for me, a unique and delightful Ash Wednesday service.
Linking up with Denise at Girlie On The Edge Blog, where she hosts Six Sentence Stories, and the cue is Heart.
(For those who are not familiar with the Christian tradition, yesterday was both Valentine's Day, a day to celebrate love, and Ash Wednesday, the start of Lent with its fasting and penitence.)

Sorry, but I gotta say
all's fair in love and war,
and you are trying to keep me from
getting where the treats are!

Ash Wednesday came early this year didn't it. I really like your fence picture today, with a Muriel of flowers painted. Gets me thinking about Sprng up here in a few months.
ReplyDeleteThose dogs are so funny! Mom will never forget the ashes as she is not Catholic but went to a Catholic college. She had never heard of the ashes on the forehead and couldn't figure out why so many kids had stuff on their faces. Life is all about learning!
ReplyDeletelol
ReplyDelete(excellent set up... lulling us into a quietly thoughtful Six... and bam! Outa left field)
great Sixifying
I enjoyed your Six. Thanks for putting me in the congregation!

ReplyDeleteThe Reverend certainly has a sense of humour! Love the picture and poem.
ReplyDeleteHA! Love your poem - "all's fair in love, war and trying to reach the treats!"........thanks for playing along with us!
ReplyDeleteHugs, Pam
Excellent Six. I can't remember ever seeing Valentines Day coming up at the same day as Ash Wednesday.
ReplyDeleteI love your posts. I like how you talked about Ash Wednesday and Valentines Day. Love the poem, how well I know the race for the treats! I noticed Easter is March 31st this year. I am going to pt up my St Patricks Day decorations early and remove them midway through the month of March. I would a beautiful Plastic door cover stating :He is Risen". Thank you for sharing everything .
ReplyDeleteYou share some of the best things. I am always happy when I come over here. My DIL Brittany is born on the 15th of February but her dad Tim is on the 14th, her brother Brandon on the 12th and her brother Adam on the 13th. They are busy with February birthdays plus oldest grandson Brody turns 6 on the 18th. I sent my SIL Joyce a birthday wish today and although I mailed it several days ago and we live 120 miles apart she only received it today. She was tickled pink because the card had a bouquet of pink roses and she and my brother were under the weather with some virus. She was so happy and I am grateful I remembered to send her that card. My spelling errors are numerous and I did not catch all of them in my previosu post. Argh.... but I will try harder next time. Have a great weekend. Stay safe.
ReplyDeleteI'll try to be good for at least an hour!
ReplyDeleteThat is a bit of a wild combo isn't it!
ReplyDeleteWho gets to the treats first is not always "polite" and orderly, lol
Not everyone can take off work in the middle of the day. Glad there was a night time service.
