A Day Early Makes No Difference, a Random and Happy Tuesday Post

It's time once again for a random and happy Tuesday, linking up with Stacy's Random Thoughts at Stacy Uncorked and Sandee at Comedy Plus.  

Because my second cataract removal was scheduled for yesterday (it went very well, so far so good, merci au Le Bon Dieu) and i do not make Carl and his poor mother go a week without my services if i can help it, i ended up cleaning Carl's room on Sunday afternoon after Becca and i went to church.

Being a day early didn't change anything, of course, except i knew going in he wouldn't have any sandwiches made for the week.  If he's going to do so, it's going to be after his mom reminds him on Sunday evening.  It's okay, though, as i wouldn't have to pack a lunch, just make sure things were ready for him to do it.

Is his ice vest supposed to go in the wash?  Too late now!

He'd washed a load but it was still wet and looking at the settings on the dryer, i understood why.  Carl now gets the washer and uses the setting properly most of the time, but the dryer still confuses him as he sets everything on Quick Dry, which is a 30 minute cycle.  Most stuff isn't dry in 30 minutes and he doesn't quite see why and thinks it should be.

Carl was not home when i arrived, so i got started quickly and by the time he walked in and started trying to go behind me and "clean," i was far enough along to just shoo him out.  He kept asking, "What do you need?  Should I pick this up?" and i kept telling him those dirty clothes are in the pile there for a reason, i've sorted them already, go ahead and leave them.  And, i kept adding, leave the lights on, i'll turn them off when i go.

As i worked, he told me the sermon had been about death, loss and grief.  Heavy topics, but you need to hear those things, i told him and he nodded.

Then he told me he'd forgotten about the library book club meeting and i told him he needed a calendar.

"I need a calendar?" he asked, and i told him a calendar on the side of his fridge where he could write these things might help, if he looked at it every day to see what was on the schedule.  I reminded him of his mom's calendar in the kitchen, and he nodded, then smiled.

The next topic was his schedule.

"I have next week off -- VBS!"  He was excited.  While he and his parents are still members at our church, Mr. L is almost homebound now and Ms. V hates driving all the way into town by herself, so she and Carl often go to a church nearby.  It's great for Carl, it has a program geared especially for special needs adults like Carl and it seems he wants to volunteer there.  They've got experience with such volunteers as he would be and if he actually gets over there, i'm sure they will handle it well.

"After that I go back to 9 o'clock," he said, referencing his work schedule.  It seems the early week was just for the 4th of July holiday and he's back to the usual.

Then he mumbled something about a nap, but needing to get up for evening church at 5pm and when would he have supper?  He didn't wait for a reply but headed out to talk to his father.

All this time i'd continued straightening and sorting and i'm not so sure what's wrong with his feet but i'm going to mention this to his mom.

Every sock has multiple corn/callus pads in it, in odd places possibly because they just get stuck there when he takes the socks off.  He may need new or better fitting shoes as his work is rough on his feet.

I was in the laundry room starting unloading the dryer and starting another load when Carl burst through the door, bumping me in the backside and saying, "Fire!  It sounds like a fire in here!"  Apparently i make too much noise when i'm in the tiny closet of a laundry room which is full to the rafters (if it had rafters, of course) with the two laundry baskets and almost no space to move them around.

I noticed he had a huge lunch on the table and figured his nap would be after.  He asked about pajamas and i told him they were all in the laundry and wouldn't be ready for a bit of a while but i'd get him a fresh pillow slip when he was ready.

He went back to eating and i went back to work.  One of the things i found while sorting through the laundry was his folding money (cash) in an envelope.  When he came in, he hadn't taken his wallet and keys out of his pocket so i went to him and we sorted his wallet a bit, got the receipts and junk cleared out and made room for his money.

Carl then stuffed the money back in the wallet and returned it to his pocket to finish his meal and i asked if he didn't want to take it out of his pocket and be a bit more comfortable.

He simply looked at me blankly, and i let it go.  No need to get him in the habit of removing his wallet at odd times, he might do it in public and there would be the makings of a disaster.

While continuing to mutter about a nap, he continued to cook himself more and more to eat.  At the rate he was going, he didn't start his nap until i was about half done, and i had a clean pillowcase for him by then, but no pajamas.  He parked on his sleep chair, with the wallet and keys still in his pocket, at least i hope they were still there as he didn't leave them in his work hat on the counter in his little kitchen.

His nap lasted a while and i was about to do my finish up mopping when he waltzed back in and asked if his pajamas were ready yet.  I told him yes and he grabbed one of his beloved silky feeling pajama tops to wrap around his pillow and went back for more shut-eye.  By now it was only a half our until that evening church service and how much do you want to bet he didn't make it?
