Words for Wednesday was begun by Delores and has become a moveable feast of word or picture or music prompts that encourages us to write stories, poems, or whatever strikes our fancy.

This month, the prompts are being provided by lissa at The Memory of Rain

This week's prompts are:
1. birthday
2. dream
3. cake
4. sugar
5. wishes
6. grant

And/or
1. joyride
2. promise
3. wishing well
4. ghost
5. flowers
6. love

“What does my LOVE want to do for her birthday?” he asked.  “Tell me your fondest DREAM for that day!”

She laughed and said, “If WISHES were horses, the beggars would ride, my mother used to tell me.  A small CAKE will do."

"I thought you were staying away from SUGAR?" his eyes held a glint of amusement.

"That's why I said a small cake," she said, looking down her nose at him.  She added, "Actually, FLOWERS would be better, but they would cost more than something we bake here."

"We could take your cousin up on the offer to take his new convertible for a short JOYRIDE," he mused.  "He said he wouldn't mind if I took you out to dinner in it on your birthday."

"Yes, we could, but I hardly call riding in a sports car in January something you'd hope for at the WISHING WELL.  Besides, you know I think those things entice people to drive more dangerously than they would otherwise and I've no desire to become a GHOST before my time."

Laughing together, he said, "We don't have much yet, but I PROMISE things will be different someday, and we will celebrate birthdays with more than just flowers and cake."

"I know," she answered, "but somehow, I don't think they will be any more fun that what we have right now."
