Each Week Has Plenty, a Ten Things of Thankful Post

 ***********************************

Every week has plenty to list for Thankful Day, and this week was no exception.

Coming home on the freeways around here carries the need to be ready for just about anything, and last Saturday there were "monsoon" storms, huge downpours in both NOLA and near where we live north of there.  Driving, i was thankful to actually run into very little of it, and as a bonus, i was able to dive off the highway at the last second when i realized there had been a major accident and roadway tie up.

This meant going the long way around, with trees down and dodging debris, but thankfully i made it through before the traffic signals all failed, as that usually means hours of delays.

Also, i'm thankful i was able to kick debris out of the road in our neighborhood and get through more quickly.

The last Sunday of July, i set down my prayer book at church and by the time i remembered, someone had picked it up.  I'm thankful it showed up in the lost and found and i got it back the first Sunday of August.

(We all know what happened.  The person who found it meant to put it in the lost and found "right after the service" and accidentally went home with it, so i'm especially thankful it was brought back, because we all tend to walk out without the one thing we "meant" to take with us, don't we.)

Monday morning, i forgot to bring something with me to Carl's place.  I had a nagging feeling i needed to go home for it, so i did and i am delightedly thankful about it.  Sweetie has some ringing in his ears (tinnitus) and can't hear water dripping, and the sink in the bathroom drips if you aren't careful.

I arrived home just before the sink was about to overflow, which can cause a big problem.  Later that day, i heard the water in the other bathroom running and got it turned off just before it overflowed (yes, we have slow drains, no, we can't do much about it).  Brother-in-Law and Sweetie have now seen first hand why they need to turn off the sinks, another thankful, as there's nothing quite like an actual near demonstration.

Because i took care of Ms. D's house the Friday before, i was able to go see Ms. JAI early on Monday.  We were thankful to get plenty done, including her sending me to the bank to cash a check for her.  I was thankful in spite of the traffic that particular day, i took back roads and made rather short work of it.

The mini-monsoon Saturday had also gifted us with a problem.  The wire which brings internet into our house was still attached, still working, but hanging dangerously low in our back yard.  Time to call our ISP and try to get a technician out.

I was thankful to have nothing scheduled for Tuesday, and after a while, i actually got a call back and got a person on the phone.  She understood the problem and transferred me to the department which handles such things, which promptly hung up on me.

Thankfully, i thought to redial the number which had called me, got a person within one minute, and was able to schedule a technician for Wednesday.

Ms. G was still worried about Covid, still having symptoms and still testing positive, and cancelled again.

While at the shelter that same morning she told me her decision, surprise, surprise, a box which at first looked like a box full of donations left at the door of the shelter actually had a kitten in it!  We were thankful the little guy didn't jump out of the open box and run off.

After the shelter, i was thankful to be able to run all my Friday errands early (groceries and pharmacy) and got home just in time, thankfully, to warn Mike-Next-Door not to run over the low-hanging wire with the lawn mower, or get himself hung up in it.

Later that day, i'm thankful the nice technician came over and got the wire tucked back up into its rightful place.

Everyone at Ms. SE and Mr. DE's place is back at work or school after the summer break.  We were thankful to get in, get the work done, take the dogs out often enough to not have any accidents, and get home rather early for a Thursday.

The evening shift at the shelter again on Friday was eventful.  We were thankful for adoptions, people looking, and training a new matchmaker (person who helps visitors find which cat/kitten they'd like to adopt).  I was also thankful for my limited knowledge of Spanish, as a father with limited English and his son came in to adopt and i was able to work with them, along with another volunteer.  They will adopt, we hope today, when mom can come back with them, too.  After all, we're thankful when everyone in the family gets to meet the new family member and agree, it means fewer cats being returned for not being a good fit.

Please write up your own list and link up with the Ten Things of Thankful, now being hosted by Clark and his cohosts.  There's always a warm welcome waiting.

  2. Glad to hear you were able to safely get off the highway during that kind of rain. It is an often I've been caught in a downpour so serious that I'm scared but it is likely to happen one of these days again. Glad you got your prayer book back, I know what it's like to have your very own book that you really want to have for the rest of your life. Hope the adoptions work out for the kittens. I'm glad that I'm feeling much better and maybe in another week or so it'll all be over.

  6. You seem to find a silver lining in even the worst of situations - we admire you for that. It must have been some sort of divine intervention that you went home and found the water problem -what a mess that would have made. We hope you have a very good week ahead.

  8. After reading your thankfuls, I am very thankful my week was mostly stress free apart from being too cold and Lola peeing in the bed, again, and having to wash ALL the bedding, again. I am also thankful you got the taps turned off, water damage is the worst!

  9. Lulu: "That was some lucky driving for sure! A long time ago when Dada was still working in an office and the power went out everywhere in San Diego County and took all the lights with it, it took our dada almost three hours to get home instead of twenty minutes!"
